Lexiwi brings together free word tools: a syllable counter, a word stress finder, a rhyming dictionary, word search by letters, a Wordle helper, a word unscrambler and printable makers (word search, lined paper and tracing letters).
How syllables and stress are worked out
English spelling doesn't tell you where syllables and stress are, so everything starts from two open dictionaries. The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary gives how each word is said in American English, with its stressed syllables. The Moby Hyphenation List gives how each word is divided in writing (syl·la·ble). A single rule engine, written in JavaScript and running in your browser, lines up every vowel sound with the letters that spell it and reconciles the two sources. When they disagree because the spoken word drops a vowel the spelling keeps (choc·o·late said “choc-late”), the tool shows the dictionary division and tells you the other count. Words missing from the dictionaries are worked out from a word that is there (walk → walking, foot + ball) or, as a last resort, estimated from spelling rules and clearly marked.
The engine is tested against 551 tricky words with checked answers. Spot a mistake? Write to contato@lexiwi.com: every error becomes a test case before it is fixed.
